An Update on Coronavirus (COVID 19)

I hope everyone is staying safe at home, staying healthy and productive.  With so many of us working from home and the occurrence of online attacks at an all-time high, we are commonly asked: “How do I keep my personal computer secure?”  This is particularly important when you may be using a personally owned machine to reach corporate resources. When doing so, you need to follow best practices to protect corporate resources from potentially harmful material on your personal machine.  Note, the following is only if you are using a personal machine from home, a corporate-owned machine, such as a laptop, should already be protected.

Best Practices to Protect Corporate Resources when using a Personal Machine

  • The most important thing you can do is: Install an ACTIVE (Has a current license) antivirus solution.

There are several options for securing your machine.  Common antivirus solutions include McAfee, Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Defender, AVG, Norton, and Webroot.  Our preferred solution is Webroot as it also gives you information on the security of weblinks and it works very well.  If you have to purchase antivirus for your home machine, you may be able to expense it to your employer.  Be sure to ask them if that is possible prior to purchase.  Below are some helpful links:

FREE OPTIONS:

If you have Windows 10, turn on Windows Defender.  It is a solid anti-virus that is pre-loaded with Windows 10. Make sure it is on and actively running.

Pro-Tips:

  • If you think you have something odd going on with your machine (you might be infected),
    • We recommend that you scan/clean it – Malwarebytes is a fantastic free option for cleaning your machine.
  • Do not run more than one antivirus at the same time.  It can be counterproductive.
  • Make sure your machine is patched up to the most current Microsoft Updates.
    • Select the Start Windows logo Start button, and then go to Settings (Gear-shaped Settings icon) > Update & Security  (Circular arrows Sync icon) > Windows Update (Circular arrows Sync icon.)

As our company responds to COVID-19, the health and safety of our employees and customers remain our top priority. The work we do is critical to many organizations, and we’re committed to being there when our customers and colleagues need us most. EasyIT has executed the part of our Business Continuity Plan that allows us to achieve continued operations and support to you.

Here is how we will continue to provide support during this pandemic:

  • Our staff is continuing with regular support shifts, most all from home.
  • Our support model meets service requests using remote tools 95% of the time. Remember that our team can remote connect with you to work on any support issue via an internet connection.
  • Support requests can be made via email to helpdesk@EasyIT.com or by telephone 614.339.4900.
  • We will suspend regularly scheduled onsite visits in efforts to minimize the risk of exposure for all parties, however, we will act in emergency situations as needed.
  • Our monitoring systems remain fully manned and functional and are not impacted by the virus.
  • In the event our services are needed onsite, we will address them on a case by case basis and work to achieve a scheduled visit. We will also use preventative measures, such as hand sanitizers and wipes, to minimize risk.

Some IT things to make your team aware of:

  • Many scammers are taking advantage of this crisis.  Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails and be wary of email attachments. Use trusted source such as legitimate, government websites for up-to-date, fact-based information about COVID-19 like www.cdc.gov, https://Ohio.gov or https://sba.gov.
  • As always do not respond to email solicitations for information or reveal personal or financial information in an email.
  • Verify a charity’s authenticity before making donations. Review the Federal Trade Commission’s page on Charity Scams for more information at this site: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/coronavirus-scams-what-ftc-doing
  • Review CISA Insights (https://www.cisa.gov/) on Risk Management for COVID-19 for more information.

It is always advisable to use your company-issued computer to perform any work or access any company data or resources. Your personal computer may not have the same level of protection and security as your company computer.
